Doing what comes naturally – the west’s suicidal animus

As around 700 rockets rained down on southern Israel last weekend, leaving four Israelis dead and many more wounded, many in Western media were doing what comes naturally to them – suspending the normal rules of journalism to distort, twist or lie. The usual, fundamental errors littered their reports – such as that Gaza was “occupied,” regardless of the fact that Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005. There was the usual reversal of aggressor and victim, with sly implications of moral equivalency between Arab attack and Israeli defense. There…

The Tory party has betrayed conservatism

Many believe that the Conservative Party may be about to self-destruct as a result of the government’s failure to deliver Brexit. The problem is that conservatism itself has lost its way. Conservatism isn’t a creed or ideology but a way of approaching the world. As the name implies, it’s about conserving what is of value in a society. Leaving the EU is all about conserving national sovereignty and democracy. The Tory party leadership, though, has abandoned much more than that. When Soviet communism collapsed, many conservatives believed their political fox…

How the “May cell” and Remainer establishment are undermining UK and western security

As you may have noticed, I’ve been taking a break from the political mayhem to recharge the mental and emotional batteries which were in danger of overheating. I’ll be getting back to normal posting soon (and doubtless getting back just as soon to yet more overheating); but for the moment I would strongly urge you to watch, read and pass on this absolutely vital and deeply frightening lecture by Professor Gwythian Prins, one of the founders of the invaluable Briefings for Brexit website, which he delivered to the Heritage Foundation…

Police have lost sight of the line of duty

In the BBC’s riveting Line of Duty a week ago, the plot involved a police decision to raid a brothel. It put at risk the arrest of the leaders of an organised crime group, because priority had to be given to rescuing the women they had enslaved. It wasn’t clear whether the officer who made this judgment call did so out of sensitivity to the political climate or concern for the welfare of the women involved. Regardless, the decision to prioritise sentiment at the expense of the most important goal…

Leaving Egypt to cross the (metaphorical) seas

At the festival of Passover, which Jews are about to celebrate, the story is recounted of how the children of Israel managed to redeem themselves from slavery through their miraculous crossing of the Red Sea in which their Egyptian pursuers proceeded to drown. Plunging into the sea was a supreme act of collective faith by the escaping Israelites, involving extraordinary courage and requiring an equally crucial act of leadership. These three factors are in conspicuously short supply in the west today. In Britain, the stalled and sabotaged Brexit process irresistibly…

Anti-hate groups have become the real voices of hate

The Southern Poverty Law Center in Alabama started life in the 1970s fighting the Ku Klux Klan but has since grown into an organisation that attacks anyone it judges guilty of promoting “hate”. Its influence is huge. With the media lapping up its denunciations of groups and individuals deemed to be beyond the progressive pale, its targets have been turned into pariahs and cast into professional and social exile. Increasingly, however, it has attacked people whose only crime is not to subscribe to left-wing shibboleths. Now, though, it has gone…

It’s not about the “Isis bride”. It’s about our standards of due process

Shamima Begum, the “Isis bride” from east London, has been granted legal aid to challenge the decision by the home secretary, Sajid Javid, to strip her of her British citizenship. Cue outrage. The Tory MP Philip Davies said it was “absolutely disgusting” to fund someone “who joined an organisation that wants to destroy our way of life and our country”. On the same day that the decision by the Legal Aid Agency was reported, evidence emerged to contest Begum’s own description of herself, while an Isis recruit in Syria, as…

How Jews claiming “Islamophobia” are helping embolden antisemitism

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) provides an invaluable service translating material from Arabic into English and thus lifting the curtain on the deranged antisemitism coursing through the Arab and Muslim world. Recently its founder, Yigal Carmon, observed that this Jew-hatred had spread to America and Europe where it was turning into “really violent threats based on Islamic texts”. And yet, he added, the American Jewish community targeted by such attacks was silent. “Not a protest, no public activity, nothing at all. They are afraid to be thought of…

The only way to end this abuse of power: replace Mrs May by a PM committed to no-deal

It has been reported that the government has ordered all operational planning for a no-deal Brexit to end. According to a leaked email seen by Sky News, the decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Mark Sedwill. On what basis has this cynical, manipulative and irresponsible decision been taken? For the possibility remains that, whatever the eventual date on which it leaves (if ever), the UK will do so with no deal. The Cabinet doesn’t even seem to have been told that abandoning no-deal preparations…

The appalling treatment of Sir Roger Scruton

The shocking character assassination and sacking of Sir Roger Scruton is beyond belief. Scruton, Britain’s pre-eminent philosopher, was interviewed by the New Statesman for its current issue. The interviewer, deputy editor George Eaton, tweeted that Scruton’s remarks were “outrageous”. What was outrageous, however, was the use Eaton made of them. For he tweeted about what Scruton had said: “On Hungarian Jews: ‘Anybody who doesn’t think that there’s a Soros empire in Hungary has not observed the facts.’” But in the interview Scruton didn’t mention that Soros was a Jew. He…
